Middle School Youth Mission Trip - June 25-27, 2018
The junior high group went to Indianapolis from June 25-27. The 10 of us from Liberty Chapel joined with a group from Huntington IN to serve at Shepherd Community Center. We partnered with them in alleviating poverty in their neighborhood. We did by planting box gardens, sorting clothes, organizing their pantry, and playing with children. Our main project for the week was planting box gardens at peoples houses. We planted 5 pepper and 5 tomato plants for each family and in doing so got to invite them to Shepherd for some of the free services they offer. They provide a summer kids program, food pantry, educational opportunities, and more. Through each of these programs, they clearly communicate the Gospel and invite people into their Bible studies. It was interesting to work in an urban environment and have a totally different experience than back home. Students learned about poverty alleviation and learned not to judge others based on first impressions. The people who run this organization were great to work with. They kept reminding us of our purpose and always kept Christ central in their mission. By the end of the week, we had heard several different people complimenting how well our Jr High students served. It's cool to work with such awesome teenagers! In our extra time, we explored the city of Indianapolis, learned about how Christ served, and talked about how we could do that in our lives.
The youth going on the mission trip included Isaiah Estelle, Emmett Perry, Aubree Hollenbaugh, Tarryn Hollenbaugh, Audrey Bowers, Meredith Bowers, and Emili Cramer. Adult chaperones were Kara Estelle, Lowynn Atkinson, and Pastor Tom Gerberich.
